You’ve chosen a beautiful new carpet from Frankly Flooring, it’s arrived, and now you’re ready to get to the fitting, but do you know what to do and have a checklist ready?
It doesn’t matter if this is your first, or one-hundredth carpet fitting experience, everyone needs to do the same thing to get the best results.
So before you start stretching, ask yourself – what do I need, to do this right?
Although we can’t fit it for you, we’ve created our carpet fitting checklist to help you every step of the way – from prep work, to end result.
What do you do with your old carpet fitting?
You might not realise just how much waste an old carpet produces. Especially if you’re replacing old underlay and grippers as well.
It’ll take more than one trip to the tip to dispose of the waste, depending on the size of the area you’re redoing, and we recommend you have the tools in place to cut the carpet in half, or any other dimensions you need to dispose of it.
After all, not everyone is lucky enough to have a van!
If your carpet is still in good condition but doesn’t fit your new flooring needs (colour, texture etc) – think about recycling it.
Putting the dimensions on a free site will help people from low-income families have a fresher carpet for free, or offer the carpet to your local animal shelters.
What do you need to install your new carpet?
- Power stretcher – this tool is the most vital piece of the floor fitting puzzle and helps you fit the carpet to your floor. If a stretcher is too pricey, take a look at renting one or ask to borrow one.
- Stanely knife – to cut your carpet to size
- Trowel and Trimmer – Make sure to trim and tuck in the carpet against the wall for a professional finish.
- Carpet seam roller – Only needed if you have to splice two pieces of carpet together due to size or location
- Carpet tape – again, only needed if you have to seam a carpet together. The tape keeps one side in place, while you blend the other into it.

How to take care of your new carpet
Like clothes or any fabric service, cleaning your carpet regularly will help your floor look fresher for longer.
We recommend cleaning your carpet once every three months, as well as investing in a good-quality vacuum cleaner.
When first fitted, remember that the carpet may take a few days to settle, so avoid vigorous sliding movements.
